Bismillaah, wa`l-hamdulillaah wa`s-salaatu wa`s-salaamu ‘alaa rasoolillaah, wa ba’ad,

My First Moments of Wearing the Hijaab…

Written by a Muslimah from the UK, February 2010.

May Allaah keep her steadfast and make her a role model for others to follow. Aameen.

(Don’t just skim through; read it all!)

I want to share my first moments of wearing the headscarf/hijaab…

Allaah says:

“O Prophet! Tell your wives and your daughters and the women of the believers to draw their cloaks all over their bodies (i.e. screen themselves). That will be better, that they should be known (as free respectable women) so as not to be annoyed. And Allaah is Ever Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.” (33:59 Surah Al-Ahzaab).

I didn’t understand it then, I really didn’t, do you really stop getting annoyed etc, but Allaah knows what I don’t. For Allaah is the most knowing, the Knower of all, hidden and apparent. There is one incident in regards to when I first wore the hijaab that I cannot forget, for the Words of Allaah is Truth! When making my way to my local station every day, I had to walk past a building construction place, a place where they were building a local community centre and there were foreign builders there every day doing their work. Whenever any woman passed by, they would say something to the woman and would whistle and harass her with their words. I was one of those women. Although at first I used to ignore them, it did start to annoy and bother me, I hated it, it made me feel uncomfortable, and this coincided with the time I started to read into covering, and wanted to cover. Cutting the long story short… The first day I wore my hijaab and walked passed this construction place, Allaah is my witness that not a soul amongst them said anything, nor did they bother to look and nor did they notice me or annoy me… For the Lord of Mankind has said: “O Prophet! Tell your wives and your daughters and the women of the believers to draw their cloaks all over their bodies (i.e. screen themselves). That will be better, that they should be known (as free respectable women) so as not to be annoyed. And Allaah is Ever Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.” That day onwards, never did those builders say anything to me, nor did they annoy me!!!

Allaahu Akbar!
